No, the irony was not lost on eager royal betters this morning, who rushed to the bookies to wager that the ‘spare heir’ would be born on 1 May.

That’s May Day, a day traditionally marked by anti-capitalist and anti-war protests against public sector cuts. It’s also known as Labour Day.
