From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Rousey beat Mayweather, Gennady Golovkin, Terence Crawford and Donald Cerrone to be crowned the best fighter at Wednesday’s ceremony. Her win came just weeks after the undefeated fighter beat Manny Pacquiao in a unanimous points decision, making him the favourite to win in that category.
After being handed the award on the red carpet, Rousey, herself an undefeated fighter, took a moment to address Mayweather by looking directly at the camera, and asking, “I wonder how he feels about being beaten by a woman for once?"
"I'd like to see you pretend not to know who I am now," she added, in an apparent reference to his past claim in an interview that he did not know who she was.
Mayweather has been charged a number of times with domestic violence and misdemeanour battery and pleaded guilty to attacking his ex-girlfriend in front of two of their children in 2010. He served two months of a three month sentence in 2012.
It isn’t the first time Rousey has seemingly taken a swipe at Mayweather over his past charges. In May, while promoting her role in the film Entourage, she was asked how she believed she would fare in a fight with Mayweather by Access Hollywood.
Rousey responded: “I don’t think me and him would ever fight unless we ended up dating."
