'If I couldn't do sport, then I'd do music'
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Pat Cash, 42, is a former tennis player. As well as winning Wimbledon in 1987, he was twice a runner-up at the Australian Open, in 1987 and 1988. He is now a successful coach.
If I weren't talking to you right now I'd be...
Well, I'm in Dubai. I'd probably still be swimming in the hotel pool or maybe working out.
A phrase I use far too often...
"Let's do it, Lleyton Hewitt." My kids are always telling me to stop.
I wish people would take more notice of...
People. Especially those with mental illnesses and the young guys.
The most surprising thing that happened to me...
Was watching a child being born. I've seen it three times and it still manages to shock me.
A common misperception of me is...
I'm bad tempered and I'm miserable all the time. It's the perception in the Australian press. It's always been that way. I don't like press conferences. The UK is slightly different.
I am not a politician but...
If I were I'd concentrate on erasing Third World debt.
I'm good at...
Being friendly. And playing guitar – well, I'm better than average. But I wish I was great.
I'm very bad at...
Maths. I can work out the basics but that's it. Waitresses are always pleased because I leave ridiculous tips.
The ideal night out is...
A late dinner at a beautiful restaurant and then on to a bar or a members' club. Or a great concert with a great rock band – maybe AC/DC. And a good night's sleep.
You know me as a tennis player but in truer life I'd have been...
If I couldn't do sport then I think maybe I'd do music.
The best age to be is...
I'm enjoying myself right now. I know what I want to do, and I'm not too old to do it.
In a nutshell, my philosophy is this...
There's no wrong and right. And do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Pat Cash was speaking at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championship, where he has appointed an official tennis ambassador. Alice-Azania Jarvis
