The Ven Bhaddanta Vicittabi Vumsa, died Sagaing Burma, 9 February, aged 81. A senior Buddhist monk, he was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records for reciting 16,000 pages of scriptures by heart in Rangoon in 1974.

Kaburo Okita, politician, died Tokyo 9 February, aged 78. A well- known economist, he was Japan's Foreign Minister (1979-80) under Prime Minister Masayoshi Ohira.
