Obituary: John Marsh
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.MAY I contribute to the memory of John Marsh on behalf of all those young men and women returning to civilian life after the Second World War with a wish to enter the field of personnel management? writes William Bree (further to the obituary by Edward Brech, 31 August).
From his own experience and as Director of the Institute of Personnel Management John Marsh had a special interest in the future of those seeking a professional qualification. One innovation he introduced for those working or studying in London was the evening tutorial group. Some 20 or 30 of us would meet regularly under his guidance to learn not the theory but the practice of human-relations leadership.
His many journeys abroad were always of great value to the bodies he served. From the US he brought back to the Industrial Welfare Society the first copy of a sound film-strip, the precursor of the training film. The production of sound film-strips became a major plank in the society's training programme for the next 10 years.
John had an enormous talent to inspire others to achieve more than they ever thought they could.
