E. Gifford Upjohn, businessman, died Kalamazoo, Michigan 19 December, aged 89. Former chairman of Upjohn Co, one of the biggest US drug companies, he was a grand- nephew of its founder, WE Upjohn. For nearly two decades, he served as president and chairman of the company, which he joined in 1930. In 1943 he became vice-president and in 1951 medical director, rising to president in 1953 and chairman in 1962.
