Anatoly Alexandrov, nuclear scientist, died 3 February, aged 90. The organiser of the Soviet nuclear power engineering programme, he accepted responsibility for the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. Former head of the Kurchatov Institute, and President of the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
