A billionaire whose Irving Industrial Group stands among North America's largest private conglomerates, and one of Canada's richest men. In 1990 Forbes magazine estimated the family fortune at dollars 5 billion, the world's 16th largest. Owned vast tracks of timberland in Canada and Maine, four newspapers in the province of New Brunswick, and founded his own oil company. His companies collectively are the largest employer in New Brunswick.
