Only deputy in the Communist parliament who voted against General Jaruzelski's introduction of martial law in 1981 to suppress the Solidarity movement. A draughtsman and designer, he organised help for artists left jobless after martial law.
Takashi Hasegawa, politician, died Tokyo 19 October, aged 80. A former justice minister, he was an influential member of the governing Liberal Democratic Party.
