Headed the Bacardi rum empire from 1950 to 1977 and, after Fidel Castro seized power in Cuba in 1959, increased production from the company's new headquarters in Nassau. Established new factories in Nassau, Bahamas, Spain, Brazil, Canada, and Martinique.
Roman Haubenstock-Ramati, composer, died Vienna 3 March, aged 75. Much influenced by Arnold Schoenberg, he wrote chamber music, a ballet, Ulysses, and operas. His Opera America had a controversial premiere in Berlin in 1966. He was awarded Austria's state prize for music in 1981.
