The actor has been campaigning for his eldest son, who was convicted of heroin possession and conspiracy to distribute narcotics in 2009, to be let out of isolation at Maryland’s Cumberland Federal Corrections Institute.
He used his Emmy acceptance speech for Behind The Candelabra as a platform to highlight his plight six months previously.
''At first I was certainly disappointed with my son, but I've reached a point now where I'm disappointed with the system,” he said.
''If you happen to have a slip, they punish you. In my son's case, he has spent almost two years in solitary confinement.''
Ex-drug addict Cameron, Douglas’ son with first wife Diandra Luker, was placed in solitary confinement after he relapsed in jail. He has not been able to have visitors or receive gifts from family or friends for two years as a result.
Drug Policy Alliance member Anthony Papa, a former advocate of Cameron, apparently told Radar Online when asked about his release: “It’s true. That’s what I heard.
“It actually happened a little while back. I’m not sure of the exact date.”
After making his speech, Douglas and his ex-wife Luker posted a petition with Papa to Change.org, asking prison officials to grant them visitation rights before his scheduled release in 2018.
He was originally sentenced to five years in 2009 after he was caught selling heroin out of a New York City hotel room.
Another four-and-a-half years were added to his sentence in 2011 when he was caught with drugs behind bars. He was then transferred from a low-security prison in Pennsylvania to the high-security Cumberland Federal Corrections Institute in Maryland.
The Oscar-winning actor accepted much of the blame for his son’s problems with drug dependency on his own absence as a father.
“My son was a drug dealer, and he tried to kill himself for a while, and I can't condone his behaviour,” he said previously.
Douglas, who is thought to have reconciled with his wife Catherine recently, has two other children: Dylan, 13, and Carys, 10.
A representative for Douglas is yet to respond to request for comment.
