From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. MSNBC was covering Donald Trump’s victory speech after winning the Indiana primary when a man, reported to be Hardball presenter Chris Matthews by Variety, can be heard speaking at the same time as Brian Williams.
As footage of Trump’s wife Melania is shown walking to the podium, the voice was heard saying: “Did you see her walk? Runway walk. My God is that great.
“I could watch that runway show.”
MSNBC did not respond to a request for comment. A spokesperson for Melania gave the following statement to Variety: “Melania Trump is an accomplished businesswoman and entrepreneur in her own right, achieving tremendous success in a variety of industries, including an illustrious modeling career, as well as being a dedicated wife and mother. It is unfortunate to see the continuous inaccuracies and misrepresentations made by the media of Mrs Trump as anything less than the independently successful woman that she is.”
