From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The prestigious Met Gala event was held in New York City last night and, as predicted, the internet had a lot to say about the various outfits worn by the high-profile guests who were lucky enough to receive an invitation.

The theme of last year’s Met Gala, China: Through the Looking Glass, generated many memes. Rihanna’s outfit spawned the most and her extravagant canary-yellow dress, with the help of the internet, was quickly transformed into a fried-egg, omelette and pizza. The internet also had fun with Sarah Jessica Parker’s flamed head-piece which in one particularly witty meme was used to heat up Rihanna’s fried-egg dress.

With the 2016 theme being Manus x Machina: Fashion in an age of Technology, who would become the internet's newest targets?

First up was Zayn Malik who modelled bionic arms as he accompanied his model girlfriend Gigi Hadid, making their red carpet debut.

Malik didn’t seem to mind though and re-tweeted one fan's suggestion that famed bionic characters would have approved of his outfit choice.

Then came Kanye West’s blue contact lenses, which apparently when asked about by E! News about the look, he responded with a one-word answer: “Vibes”.

And then there was Claire Danes’ ‘Cinderella’ dress which, true to the theme, met with technology by glowing in the dark. The dress was roundly met with a positive response.

Rita Ora and Beyonce, who posed for a picture together at the event quashing any rumours of a rift, also were targeted by memes.

Although absent in attendance, Rihanna still had the best response:

The best of the Met Ball 2016

Roll on next year.
