From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Matthew McConaughey is internationally famous but he has yet to harness the power of YouTube like the social media influencers building fame and fortune out of their accounts.

A verified account exists under the Oscar-winning actor’s name and has been active for a year, but it is somewhat lacking in followers.

The channel was highlighted in a Reddit thread when it had just over 8,000 subscribers, a figure that may be explained by the fact that content is rarely posted on his page: McConaughey has shared just six videos in one year. His Twitter page has over 2.1 million followers by comparison, a low number compared to some of the most followed people on network such as Katy Perry who boasts 91.9 million followers.

But, as many pointed out, even generic tweets from his account still see high levels of engagement.

His seasonal videos follow a similar format and tend to emerge around US holidays. Three of the six focus on charitable causes and see McConaughey welcoming viewers from his home in Austin, Texas.

Many comments noted how McConaughey’s videos were not quite as slickly produced as his YouTube savvy counterparts.

“Except for the fact he's an amazing actor he's just your average 46-year-old southern dad trying the ViewTube,” said one.

“Half his videos all have the same title ‘Matthew McConaughey's video o…' so I think it's safe to say he doesn't really know much about technology.”

Redditors are now trying to make his account famous. Judging by the leap in subscribers - at 45,000 at the time of publication - they may well succeed.
