From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A video by the fashion and beauty vlogger, who has over 700,000 subscribers, sparked panic and fears it could contain a hidden cry for help. In the clip, which was titled “Date Outfit Ideas”, the 19-year-old appeared disorientated and marks were visible on the back of her arms.
Some fans claimed they could hear the message “help me” faintly whispered in the background. Others speculated over her state of mind. As concern grew, the hashtag #SaveMarinaJoyce trended on Twitter.
The Metropolitan Police moved to quell fears by carrying out a welfare check on the north Londoner. A spokesperson confirmed to the Independent that Joyce was “safe and well” in the early hours of this morning.
Joyce also insisted she was safe and well on her live stream and said she was bruise free.
“I don’t need help guys. I don’t have bruises anymore, it’s a really sad story and I can’t really explain it,” she said.
“I’m not a danger. I am safe,” she later added.
During the live stream, Joyce answered a call apparently from a friend. “I’m on You Now,” she could be heard saying. “Are you ok, are you crying? I love you so much, ring you later. I hope you’re ok. I literally am fine.”
“Guys you are worrying my friends,” she told the camera after hanging-up. “My friends are so panicked about me, I think she was crying. The finger [which appeared in a video] is fine, it’s my mum’s finger. I’m sorry about the bruises. I’m not being held captive. I’m saying the truth."
Later in the live stream, Joyce directed viewers to her Facebook and Instagram and asked them to leave comments.
She continued to promote a morning rave party in east London on 3 August.
“You should only go if you want to party. I’ll be there at 6.30am in the morning. I actually recommend people don’t go just in case, I don’t want people to get in trouble with their mum,” she said. “It’s a morning party. It’s completely sober, so good, you can bring your mum to the party. It’s like a proper party, like house music, like sick music. You shouldn’t be scared.”
Later in the stream, she read out a comment from a concerned fan who had asked, “Is it just that you've been feeling down?” Joyce explained she had not been as happy as she had previously been in the last few days.
