In an age of social media just one ill-advised tweet, caption or Instagram post from a high-profile individual can result in that all too familiar public apology.

Celebrities should use their peers' gaffes as a learning tool to avoid sparking a backlash. However, it appears Lindsay Lohan did not take note of Mischa Barton’s recent Instagram blunder when she essentially repeated it.

On Tuesday, Lohan posted a photo of herself sitting on a bed, wearing silk pyjamas and with her hand to her mouth. While this photo would not normally stand out from among the selfies flooding Instagram, the caption caused followers to glance at it twice.

“If history were to be folded, where would we put the crease?” the Mean Girls actress wondered. “Pray for the ones we lose every day and we appreciate every breath you, we all, take #nice #turkey #turnup and do something (goodnight and sleep with an idea for the future).”

Her reflection on the Nice terror attack and recent events in Turkey appeared at odds with the photo, which also bizarrely tagged the lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret, leading some followers to label it “insincere” and “tone deaf”.

“SO insincere and such an inappropriate photo! Who are you trying to impress with this picture? The people of France who have had loved ones killed and injured as a result of this terrorist attack? Have some common sense [and] respect!” one user wrote.

Another suggested: “Someone here wants to USE what happened in Nice to make some personal advertisement. Otherwise another photo would be used!”

“You really put Nice, Turkey and ‘turnup’ hashtags next to each other?” one questioned.

Lohan’s referred to the controversial post in the next picture she shared of her cuddling her new fiancee Egor Tarabasov in the sea.

“The perfect silence #love Try to think about the last thing I put on my page… The words are stronger than the picture you see,” she said.

Lohan’s post comes after the former The OC actress Barton’s photo which reflected on the fatal shooting of a black man Alton Sterling by police in the US. The 30-year-old’s post was branded out of touch by users highlighting her own privilege after she angrily called for justice and gun control in a caption placed next to a bikini-clad photo of herself on board a yacht, drinking a glass of wine. She swiftly deleted the post and later apologised if it “went out of context”.

A representative for Lohan did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
