Lady Gaga praises Jaime King’s bravery after model refers to ‘years of abuse as a minor’ on Twitter

Lady Gaga has voiced her support for Jaime King after the model said the singer’s Oscars performance made her feel like she was healing “from years of abuse as a minor in the industry”.

Gaga performed her Oscar-nominated song “Till It Happens To You” during Sunday night’s ceremony. The powerful performance featured a group of rape survivors and was introduced by Vice President of the US, Joe Biden, who told the crowd: “Despite significant progress over the last few years, too many women and men on and off campuses are still victims of sexual assault.”

Following the performance, King wrote a tweet explaining the effect it had on her.

She followed this up by sharing a photograph of herself as a teenager on Instagram, which she titled “SURVIVOR” and alleged she had suffered abuse in the past.

As well as thanking a number of family and friends for their support, King thanked the writers of the song, Lady Gaga and Diane Warren, who have both previously spoken of being sexually assaulted.

After sharing the Independent’s article about King’s post, Gaga replied to the Pearl Harbour actress, telling her she is “brave” and a “warrior leading the way”.

Gaga has spoken before about her alleged rape at the hands of a man 20 years her senior. In December, she told a New York Times panel that it “changed her completely”

Since speaking out about the alleged rape on a number of occasions and working on “Till It Happens to You” a soundtrack to The Hunting Ground, a documentary about rapes on US college campuses, the singer has found herself as a role model for survivors of sexual assault.

This was brought into the mainstream through the Oscars ceremony when she played the piano surrounded by a group of men and women who had messages like “It happened to me” and “Not my fault” written on their arms.

Gaga also recently leant her support to Kesha, who recently was told by a New York judge she could not make music outside of her contract with producer Dr Luke, who she alleges raped her a decade ago.

Dr Luke has denied all allegations against him and labelled them “outright lies that have been advanced to extort a contract renegotiation and money”. He is countersuing Kesha for defamation.
