It seems to be the celebrity feud that will not go away as Kim Kardashian-West has finally waded into the ongoing row between her husband Kanye West and Taylor Swift.
Swift and West have a colourful history which began when he stormed the stage as she was accepting a VMA award in 2009 to proclaim that, in his opinion, Beyonce should have won instead. Over the next few years, the pair appeared to have patched things up and it was Swift who presented the rapper with a Vanguard VMA award just last year.
However, when West debuted his new album, The Life of Pablo, last year a lyric on the song “Famous” said: “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex, Why? I made that b***h famous”. Swift responded with a statement, which said: “Kanye did not call for approval. But to ask Taylor to release his single ‘Famous’ on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a misogynistic message. Taylor was never made aware of the actual lyric, ‘I made that b***h famous’.” West defended himself on Twitter saying he had an “hour long convo” with Swift about the line and “she thought it was funny and gave her blessing”. Days later at the Grammy awards, the 26-year-old singer appeared to make a thinly veiled dig at West when accepting her award, warning women against people taking “credit for their accomplishments”.
Now, West’s wife has entered the forum claiming Swift “totally gave the okay” to the lyric.
“She totally approved that,” she told GQ magazine in a candid interview. “She totally knew that was coming out. She wanted to all of a sudden act like she didn’t. I swear my husband gets so much sh*t for things [when] he really was doing proper protocol and even called to get it approved.”
The 35-year-old also said “so many respected people in the music business” heard the alleged conversation.
“I mean he’s called me a b***h in his songs,” she continued. “That’s just, like, what they say. I never once think ‘What a derogatory word! How dare he?’ Not in a million years. I don’t now why she just, you know, flipped out all of a sudden.”
The businesswoman then claimed on the alleged phone call, Swift told West: “When I get on the Grammy red carpet, all the media is going to think that I’m so against this, and I’ll just laugh and say, ‘The joke’s on you guys. I was in on it the whole time’.”
“And I’m like, wait, but [in] your Grammy speech, you completely dissed my husband just to play the victim again,” Kardashian-West said.
Kardashian-West continued to claim that the alleged conversation between Swift and West was recorded on tape as the rapper films everything during his album-making process in the hope of maybe one day releasing a documentary. She says the only conversation between West’s and Swift’s parties following release of the lyric was a letter from Swift’s lawyers which allegedly said: “Don’t ever let that footage come out of me saying that. Destroy it”.
According to GQ, West’s team insisted the alleged conversation had been filmed and they’d heard from Swift’s lawyers but did not provide proof to the magazine.
In response to Kardashian-West’s claims, Swift has released a statement which continues to deny she approved the song lyric and says much of Kardashian-West’s claims to GQ are “incorrect” and that she doesn’t understand why the married couple of two years won’t “leave her alone”.
“Taylor does not hold anything against Kim Kardashian as she recognises the pressure Kim must be under and that she is only repeating what she has been told by Kanye West. However, that does not change the fact that much of what Kim is saying is incorrect.
“Kanye West and Taylor only spoke once on the phone while she was on vacation with her family in January of 2016 and they have never spoken since. Taylor has never denied that conversation took place. It was on that phone call that Kanye West also asked her to release the song on her Twitter account, which she declined to do. Kanye West never told Taylor he was going to use the term, ”that bitch“ in referencing her. A song cannot be approved if it was never heard. Kanye West never played the song for Taylor Swift. Taylor heard it for the first time when everyone else did and was humiliated. Kim Kardashian's claim that Taylor and her team were aware of being recorded is not true, and Taylor cannot understand why Kanye West, and now Kim Kardashian, will not just leave her alone.”
A representative for Kardashian-West declined to comment further, a representative for West did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
