Fans of the legendary rockstar Jimi Hendrix will be given a rare glimpse into his domestic life when his London flat is opened permanently to the public.

The flat in Mayfair, central London, has been carefully restored to the condition it was in when he lived there with his girlfriend Kathy Etchingham in 1969.

The apartment is in the same block as the home owned by George Frideric Handel, a German composer who wrote many of his masterpieces there during the seventeenth century. His flat will also be ready to view as part of the exhibition.

The £2.4 million Handel & Hendrix in London restoration has been completed with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and donations.

Visitors will have the chance to view an exhibition tracing Hendrix’s life in London between 1968 and 1969, which includes previously unseen photographs of the "Foxy Lady" singer taken at the flat.

The main living room and bedroom have been assiduously restored to the same condition as they would have been in while Hendrix wrote songs for his album "Electric Layland", released in the summer of 1968.

Chairman of the trust, Alistair Stranack said: “It is hard to think of another home in the world with such a concentration of musical genius.

“We hope that the opening of Jimi Hendrix's flat will give people an added insight into the life and work of a figure whose actions have been examined no end since his death in 1970.

“While it has been a pleasure to have been working in Jimi's bedroom for the past few years, it is even more pleasing to be able to throw it open to everybody else.”

Tickets for the exhibition will go on sale on 2 November.
