From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The BBC is liaising with police over what it described as an "unprovoked physical attack" by Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon.

The broadcasting corporation confirmed it would not renew Clarkson’s contract following an inquiry into a ‘fracas’ at a Yorkshire hotel. The report concluded that he attacked Tymon following a row over catering arrangements.

The BBC director general Tony Hall released a statement saying a "line has been crossed" with this latest incident, which he said involved a member of staff taking himself to A&E after a “physical altercation accompanied by sustained and prolonged verbal abuse of an extreme nature”.

"There cannot be one rule for one and one rule for another dictated by either rank, or public relations and commercial considerations," he said.

"We need distinctive and different voices but they cannot come at any price. Common to all at the BBC have to be standards of decency and respect."

The BBC said North Yorkshire police has asked to see the report into the incident.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "North Yorkshire Police is liaising with the BBC regarding the alleged incident in North Yorkshire involving Jeremy Clarkson.

"We have asked the BBC for the report which details the findings of their internal investigation into the matter.

"The information will be assessed appropriately and action will be taken by North Yorkshire Police where necessary.

"It would not be appropriate for North Yorkshire Police to comment further at this time."
