From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Much has been made of the budding friendship between Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Schumer after the first pictures emerged showing the pair holidaying together earlier this year.

Their acquaintance began after Lawrence professed her admiration for the comedian and the pair soon met, apparently hitting it off immediately. Plans to write a film together were formed and efforts at drafting a script began. A picture of the pair Schumer clinging on to the back of a jet ski driven by Lawrence cemented the perception of the pair as new best friends.

But among all of this hype was the lesser known Laura Simpson, who rang into Andy Cohen's What What Happens Live to reassert her position as Lawrence’s true best friend.

Simpson is the pal Lawrence took as her date to the Academy Awards and grabbed by the neck as she took her second tumble at the awards ceremony. She wrote a memorable blog about her experience and going viral after being unceremoniously dragged down by her friend.

Lawrence was visibly shocked as the caller announced herself as Laura and put the Joy actress on the spot with a very important question.

“Jen, I want to clear this up once and for all,” Simpson said. “Who is your best friend? Me or Amy Schumer?”

“You sausage! You know I love you,” replied Lawrence, before explaining: “She got upset after the sea-doo pictures came out — the jet ski pictures.” Returning to Simpson, she attempted to reassure her. "You’re my sausage, nobody else could ever - well, that sounds wrong ."
