From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Mexican-American music legend Selena will be posthumously honoured with a star Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017.

Known to her fans as the “Queen of Tejano Music”, Selena Quintanilla-Perez was named in the latest list of celebrities to adorn the famous walkway. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce made the announcement Tuesday morning.

“The Walk of Fame Selection Committee is thrilled to announce our newest honorees to the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” said television producer Vin di Bona. “The Committee looked carefully at each nominee and we feel that we have selected a great group of talent that will appeal to the tastes of many fans around the world.”

Selena, born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas, skyrocketed to the top of Tejano charts in the 1990s, and was about to make her English-language crossover before she was fatally shot by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldívar, in a motel on 31 March 1995. Saldívar had been accused of embezzling money from the club.

Selena was only 23.

“Myself and my family are very excited about it,” Suzette Quintanilla Arriaga, Selena's sister and band drummer, told the Corpus Christi Caller Times. “We're honoured that people are still remembering her 21 years [after her death].”

The singer is best know for performing “Como la Flor”, “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” and “Dreaming of You”. She won a Grammy for "Best Mexican-American Album" in 1993.

She was portrayed by Jennifer Lopez in the 1997 biopic, Selena, directed by Gregory Nava.

Other celebrities receiving stars include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Eva Longoria, and Ice Cube.
