Despite being one Donald Trump's most outspoken and acerbic critics, Chrissy Teigen decided to send birthday wishes when the presumptive Republican candidate turned 70.

However, Teigen's message veered sharply away from those sent by his other well-wishers. The model and businesswoman decided to share a photo of Mr Trump on her Instagram account and caption it: “Happy Birthday, you monumental asshole”.

She didn’t stop there. Teigen also sent him instructions on how to deactivate his Twitter account, echoing the message sent to him by presumptive Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton last week.

Although the post was welcomed by many of her followers, it predictably received a backlash from Mr Trump's supporters on Twitter.

So when a user suggested she should leave the country if she “hates [Mr Trump] so much”, Teigen promised to just “continue hating him for now”. She then claimed: “Perhaps when you hate more than five demographics that make up America, you should leave?”

In recent days, Mr Trump has re-iterated his call to suspend immigration on Muslims as well as halting immigration from those from countries with "a proven history of terrorism" after the attack on the Orlando LGBT nightclub Pulse. He has consistently denied he and his policies are anti-Muslim.

Teigen had one more promise for her followers.

Teigen and her husband John Legend have been vocal opponents of the billionaire businessman since he began gaining headway into his presidential campaign.

She described a Mr Trump re-tweet which branded her a “trashy gutter mouth woman” as the “greatest birthday gift ever” in December after she called him out for announcing he would be meeting with a “a large group of African American pastors” privately and so not for the press.

Other Trump vs Teigen/Legend spats have included Legend responding to Trump’s son after he mocked anti-Trump protesters and suggested they didn’t even know what they were protesting about.

“I think they were protesting your racist father. This isn’t complicated,” Legend responded bluntly.

The married couple of two years also took on Piers Morgan last month after he claimed Muhammad Ali’s comments on race were more “inflammatory and racist” than Mr Trump’s.
