The producer and television personality’s body was found in the Four Seasons hotel in Canary Wharf on Tuesday, he was 62.
Also known for his marriage to Liza Minnelli, Gest took part in various reality TV shows over the past decade and proved incredibly popular with British audiences. Tributes from fellow contestants and celebrity friends have poured in on social media since news of his death emerged.
A source told the Evening Standard Gest had not been seen for two days before his body was discovered and he had been living at the hotel for six months.
According to the source, his secretary became worried when Gest didn’t answer her calls for two days so she contacted the hotel manager and security.
“They went to check his room and he was in the sitting room, lying on the floor of the suite. They called the police,” the source said. “It’s really sad. Everybody was shocked,” they added.
Other reports suggest the star was frail and had been suffering from ill health before his death.
According to another source, the 62-year-old was also on medication for chest problems, high blood pressure and was taking sleeping pills for insomnia, reports the Daily Mirror.
Concerns over Gest’s health were sparked earlier this year during his appearance on Celebrity Big Brother when he departed the house after just 13 days due to unspecified medical reasons. His CBB housemate Daniella Westbrook later claimed he had pneumonia.
His death is currently being treated as “unexplained” and the Metropolitan Police said in a statement: “A post-mortem will be held in due course.”
