From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Fans mourning the death of David Bowie have noticed a striking similarity between the late glam rock singer and his pet dog: they both appear to have different coloured eyes.
Bowie passed away aged 69 after an 18-month cancer illness last month. This week, his widow the supermodel Iman was spotted by various media outlets, for the first time since news of his death, walking their pet dog Max in New York City.
Max, fans have noted, seems to have two different coloured eyes as seen in a post-walk picture shared by Iman on her Instagram page in October last year.
However the common belief that Bowie had different coloured eyes isn’t entirely accurate. In fact the "Changes" singer’s mismatched eyes were as a result of anisocoria - a condition where the pupils are different sizes as Bowie’s left pupil was actually permanently dilated.
The illusion of different coloured eyes is created because the dilated pupil doesn’t respond to light as well as the right pupil.
The different sized pupils were as a result of a childhood fight where his friend punched him and scratched the eyeball, leaving the muscles that contract the iris paralysed.
The friend George Underwood was reportedly thanked by Bowie later on for the “kind of mystique” his iconic eyes gave him.
Bowie’s most recent album Blackstar, which was released just days before his death, has since gone on to top UK and US album charts. It was announced this week that Lady Gaga, who has long credited the singer as an inspiration, will perform a tribute set in honour of him at the Grammy awards taking place on 15 February.
