From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.David Beckham has affirmed his nice-guy reputation once again by surprising a paramedic and her elderly patient who had taken a fall in London by buying them a tea and coffee.
Senior Paramedic Catherine Maynard from the Cycle Response Unit was treating the gentleman on Monday when she thought she saw the footballing legend walk past her.
“I was waiting with my patient for an ambulance to transfer him to hospital and although I was keeping him warm it was very cold outside," she explained. "All of a sudden, I looked up and saw someone who looked like David Beckham walking past us. He said hello and got in his car. I said to the man I was treating, ‘I think that was David Beckham’.”
Ms Maynard turned out to be right as just ten minutes later Beckham returned with a cup of coffee for her and a cup of tea for the patient.
“We were both very amused, and flattered. It was awful cycling around in the cold today and I couldn’t believe it when he came back with some hot drinks - I was so chuffed.”
The London Ambulance Service thanked Beckham on Twitter and said gestures such as this “make our crews feel appreciated”.
The patient was treated for minor injuries and taken to a nearby urgent care centre.
Since announcing his retirement from football in 2013, the 40-year-old has devoted much of his time to his charity work. In 2014 he visited the Philippines in the wake of Typhoon Hayan and last year became visibly emotional when recounting his experience during a speech at a UN meeting.
