Chloë Grace Moretz has responded to the controversy surrounding Kim Kardashian-West's nude selfie after becoming embroiled in the debate on Twitter.
Defending her initial comments over the “internet-breaking” selfie, the 19-year-old American actress claimed her remarks had been misinterpreted.
“All I'll say is that I think a lot of things can be misconstrued in a lot of ways,” she told Elle Magazine.
“And I think if people open their minds more, and they try to look deeper into something than just something that is a very big, hot, fiery button to hide behind... I think if people looked into something bigger that I was trying to speak upon, they wouldn't be so easy to fire back silly, miscellaneous things.”
“Depict yourself adequately as what you want to be seen as,” Moretz added.
Kardashian-West's photo prompted a surge of debates over sexual empowerment and body image, with Moretz triggering controversy when she suggested the reality TV star, model and businesswoman was not a suitable role model.
“I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than just our bodies,” the 500 Days Of Summer actress turned model wrote on Twitter.
After being accused of “slut shaming”, Moretz replied, “There's a huge difference in respecting the platform that you're given as a celebrity and 'slut shaming' something I never have done and would never do”.
The 35-year-old star fired back at Moretz, welcoming her to Twitter in jest.
Kardashian-West has routinely been outspoken about using her sexuality as an instrument of agency, self-expression and ultimately female liberation. As she so lucidly explains in her empowering essay to commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day, “I will not live my life dictated by the issues you have with my sexuality. You be you and let me be me”.
