At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Criminal charges against Simon and Garfunkel singer Paul Simon over a fight with his wife have been dropped by prosecutors in the US.

The 72-year-old had been scheduled to be in court Tuesday charged with disorderly conduct but did not appear with his wife, Edie Brickell.

Lawyers for the prosecution told a judge they were declining to pursue the case, meaning the charges will be dropped and eventually erased after 13 months.

Police said the couple fought in a cottage on their property in Connecticut on 26 April.

Brickell told officers she confronted her husband after he did something to “break her heart,” according to police, but she did not provide details.

She told officers her husband shoved her and she slapped him. A report said Simon suffered a cut to his ear and Brickell, who smelled of alcohol, had a bruise on her wrist.

Both told a court on 28 April that they did not consider the other a threat, and no protective order was issued.

Simon has won 12 Grammies winner and is a member of both the songwriters’ and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — as half of the duo of Simon and Garfunkel and as a solo artist.

Brickell, a folk singer is perhaps best known for the song “What I Am,” recorded with her band the New Bohemians and released in 1988.

The couple married in 1992 and have three children, Adrian, Lulu and Gabriel.
