From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Ryan McDill has been called the worst ever contestant on reality dating show The Bachelorette in its illustrious history after slapping a woman's bottom and asking why he wasn't "rape" a fellow contestant.

The programme sees two women compete for the affections of 25 men, with the aim of a proposal at the end of the incredibly romantic programme.

However, there was trouble in paradise when Ryan McDill groped the bottom of one of the contestants - dubbing her "Ryan approved".

He then started unbuttoning his shirt and asking romantic rival JJ: "Why am I not raping you right now? That's my whole thing."

He was promptly ejected from the programme.

Shocked fans responded by tweeting reminders that rape jokes are never funny, and shouldn't be used for shock value.

"I wasn’t blacked out and knew exactly what I was doing," McDill told TMZ.

"People need to get off their high horse. It was awesome and entertaining."

McDill told Entertainment Tonight: "I wasn’t interested in Kaitlyn, but was interested in Britt. I felt it was obvious Britt wasn’t going to be the one, so I just started being entertaining and got way too drunk, started acting crazy, and it turned into gold."
