Amal Alamuddin and George Clooney's wedding: This is by far the best headline about those nuptials in Venice over the weekend

Can you imagine a world free from gender inequality and the assumed importance of fame? News stories might look more like this

As is the way of the unbalanced world, the coverage of the most talked about wedding since some actor and actress called Brad and Angelina tied the knot a month beforehand tended to focus on the fact that George Clooney is a famous man who has starred in lots of films and frequently turns up on the red carpet.

They focused on the "stars descending" on Venice, conjuring images of gilded birds, squawking for attention and splaying their feathers as they promenaded along the Grand Canal.

It focused on the glitz and glamour of the ceremony; the lantern-like Giambattista Valli dress Amal Alamuddin "stepped out" in the following day.

What they didn’t focus on enough, it seems, is that while Alamuddin might not have starred in lots of films or frequently taken turns on the red carpet, she is famed for being one of the world’s top human rights lawyers. She's starred in high courts the world over and played legal counsel to of the biggest names in politics.

Names, you know, like Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. Like former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko. And as UN Special Envoy Kofi Annan’s advisor on Syria.

Hats off, therefore, to The Business Woman, for this stunning headline:

“Amal Alamuddin, a 36 year old London-based dual-qualified English barrister and New York litigation attorney who has long been a high-profile figure in international refugee and human rights law has gone against the trend for professional women in her field and married… an actor,” the first par reads.

“Little is known of Amal’s earlier relationships (we assume she was climbing that corporate ladder and smashing glass ceilings) but she’s tying the knot with an actor, whose name is George Clooney, we’re told,” the piece ends with.

“He’s probably a nice man, but seems to be a bit clingy, as since she met him it’s hard to find a photo or footage of Amal without him hanging around in the background.

“We only hope he doesn’t hold her back from conquering the world. We think this George Clooney fellow has scored big time.

“He’s been quoted as saying he was ‘marrying up’… we agree.”
