From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

He isn’t a man known for his delicate turn of phrase.

But few expected rapper 50 Cent to blame his disastrous baseball pitch at a New York Mets game last week on “excessive masturbation”.

He made the crass confession during a Reddit AMA session yesterday (4 June).

Answering one fan who asked why he was so utterly terrible at throwing a ball in a straight line, he said: "I have a skeletal muscle injury on my left shoulder from excessive masturbation so take it easy lol[sic]."

However, it isn’t the first excuse he’s come up with for the pitch this week. Speaking to Good Morning American, he said the ball simply slipped out of his hand.

"I'm not a professional pitcher, I make music," he said. And, after his efforts, he should be encouraged not to give up his day job for a career in sport any time soon, either.

Nor should he sign himself up for any line of employment which allows him within a mile’s radius of a female member of staff. Because elsewhere in the AMA, he threatened to grope Iggy Azalea.

“Iggy azalea's booty real or no?!!!” one fan asked.

“next time i see her ima squeeze it and find out for you ok. I will report back to you shortly lol [sic],” 50 wrote back. No capital letters, excessive amounts of sexism. All in a day’s work.

Now let’s take a look at that pitch again:

So much better the second time round.
