Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Dead parrot?

Palin is back. And no, it’s not to return his, uh, lacklustre Norwegian Blue “pining for the fjords”. He’s soon to star in a TV drama for the first time in over 20 years, set in his home county of Yorkshire.

A comedy?

Palin plays Tom Parfitt whose admittance to a nursing home triggers a series of inexplicable events and a violent death, leading to a voyage into an “eerie and dangerous world of lost love and betrayal”.

So a return to his travelogues?

Uh, no; more ghoulish than that. “I was attracted to [the drama] Remember Me not only by the northern setting, but also by a good, strong, challenging role, something I could really get what remains of my teeth into,” Palin said. “I’ve always loved ghost stories, so playing the lead in one is a very exciting prospect.”

How has be keeping busy?

He popped up last year in Ian Hisplop’s World War One black comedy The Wipers Times and more recently in Wyeth’s World, a documentary about American artist Andrew Wyeth. He was a guest editor on Radio 4’s Today programme over the Christmas period and is soon to release the third instalment of his diaries. Then there are the film appearances, the charity work and his three-year stint as President of the Royal Geographical Society.

And now for something completely the same.

Yes, the kings of comedy who are the surviving members of the original Monty Python line-up – John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Eric Idle, alongside Palin – are set to reunite for a string of sold-out shows at London’s O2 arena in July – the first night of which sold out in 43.5 seconds.

So, about that parrot…

This is Ipswich; you’re after Bolton, aren’t you?
