Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. It’s that lady from The King of Queens. How is she doing since she gave up Scientology?
Pretty well, actually. According to a source close to the actress, she is planning to publish a memoir and has received offers from publishers eager to snap up the book, and for stacks of money too. We can see why: rumours that she will tell all about her relationships with other celebs in the religion, and growing up as a member of the church, sound pretty juicy.
Anything else in there that might be worth reading?
She’s had quite the colourful life. She moved to LA with her family when she was 13 and converted to Scientology as a child after her mother joined the church. She dropped out of school a year later to pursue her acting career. Other than her most famous role in The King of Queens, she’s starred in Saved by the Bell and had a turbulent stint on the US chat show The Talk, from which she was mysteriously sacked in 2011.
So what went wrong?
Before the split she was a staunch defender of Scientology, hitting out at those she saw as having closed minds towards it. But last month she had finally had enough, after what she called “years of interrogations” because she dared to question leader David Miscavige on the church’s practices and the disappearance of his wife, Shelly.
Anyone else put off by the cult – sorry, religion?
Yes. Tom Cruise, probably the best-known Scientologist, convinced both of his then-wives, Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes, to join, but both left the church soon after divorcing him. Nazanin Boniadi, chosen by the church to be Cruise’s new girlfriend, also left after she was punished for insubordination by being made to scrub toilets with a toothbrush, dig ditches in the middle of the night, and promote founder L Ron Hubbard’s theories on street corners.
