Klaus von Bismarck, public servant, died Cologne 22 May, aged 85. President of the Goethe Institute 1977-89.

Fritz Leutwiler, businessman, died Zurich aged 72. President, Swiss National Bank 1974-84, Bank of International Settlements 1982-84.

Nigel Bruce, businessman, died 20 May aged 89. Chairman, South Eastern Gas Board 1960-72. Author of Chronicles of the 1st Battalion the Rangers (KRRC), 1939-45.

Herman De Coninck, writer, died Lisbon 22 May, aged 53. Belgian poet and editor of a literary magazine, the New World.

The Ven Bazil Marsh, priest, died Northampton 23 May, aged 75. Archdeacon of Northampton 1964-91.
