The Taisei Maru was among a 30-strong Japanese fleet involved in a stand-off with the Irish Naval Service on the edge of Ireland's 200-mile fishery zone limit last Friday when five men investigating an emergency in its engine room were overcome by a gas escape from a refrigeration unit. Two Japanese tuna ship skippers, remanded on bail after the arrest of their vessels last week, are due back in court in Co Cork in November.
A tuna ship was last night under observation by two Maritime Safety Agency vessels off the coast of Japan after an apparent mutiny left 11 people dead. The mutineers were said to be locked in their cabins by other crew members on the Honduras-registered Pesca Mar.
