TRUST'S FIGHT GOES PUBLIC

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

To mark Wildlife Week, which starts tomorrow, conservationist Professor David Bellamy will be touring Britain to highlight the Wildlife Trusts' local efforts to conserve the UK's threatened habitats and species. The Wildlife Trusts' president will make 14 stops, including London, Cardiff and Belfast, as well as visiting nature reserves around the country.

The Wildlife Trusts have laid on more than 300 events during Wildlife Week. For children there will be family days, organised by Wildlife Watch, the club for junior members of the Wildlife Trusts, which welcomes newcomers. There will be Rockwatch days for budding geologists, water-based activities to mark World Oceans Day on June 8, and minibeast hunts which will help children discover the earth beneath their feet - a myriad of "creepy crawlies" - essential links in the food chain. Woodland sculpture, face painting, pond dipping, rockpool safaris and educational games have also been lined up. The wonders of the nocturnal world will be experienced via a host of "bat spots" and "mothathons" led by Wildlife Trusts experts. Guests will see a variety of bats on the wing, and in some cases, leaders will use bat detectors to identify species by deciphering their ultrasonic calls. This year, Wildlife Watch is also running Water Volewatch - a nationwide survey of the declining water vole.

To book places on a Wildlife Week event in your area call your local Wildlife Trust, (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday).
