Mirror website sees more than 100 per cent traffic in wake of Sun.co.uk paywall

The Mirror Group Digital website has enjoyed a rise of more than 100 per cent annual growth in its traffic after the rival Sun.co.uk site was made into a subscription only service.

The Mirror operation – which included content from the group’s three newspaper titles Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror and Sunday People and adds traffic from its related sites, 3am.co.uk and MirrorFootball.co.uk – recorded 34,416,732 monthly users in August, up 103.12 per cent on the same month last year. Its daily audience of 1,731,520 was up 106.25 per cent year-on-year and 19.65 per cent on the previous month.

The site for The Sun, owned by News UK, began charging for access on 1 August.

The biggest British news site is Mail Online with more than 9m daily browsers and more than 137m monthly browsers. Its daily traffic is up 2 per cent on last month, according to monthly statistics released by official press industry body the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

The Guardian saw daily traffic fall by 5.83 per cent to 4,519,849.

The Independent’s website recorded a 5.69 per cent monthly increase in users to 1,295,170 and monthly browsers climbed to 27,628,344, an increase of 5.33 per cent month-on-month and 42.84 per cent on the previous year.
