The Independent on Sunday has won Weekend Newspaper of the Year at the 2014 Newspaper Awards.

The Independent and i newspapers were both “commended” in the National Newspaper category.

The Independent’s website was also commended in the Digital News Service award. The Evening Standard’s ES Magazine was commended in the Regional Supplement/Magazine of the Year.

Commenting on The Independent on Sunday, The Newspaper Awards’ Winners’ Book said: “It was the fresh, modern look of The Independent on Sunday that impressed the judging panel, many of whom praised the paper’s ability to deliver weight of content without the bulk of various supplements.

“This was a close-run race between the two contenders but it was The Independent on Sunday’s originality and freshness that tipped the balance in its favour.”

One judge commented that the paper was “really vibrant and looks genuinely fresh”.

Lisa Markwell, the paper’s editor, tweeted that she was “so proud”.

At the Press Awards, also held last night the Evening Standard, which is owned by The Independent’s publisher Evgeny Lebedev, won The Cudlipp Award.

The Independent’s Steve Connor was “highly commended” in the Science and Health reporter category.
