Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Ian Birrell is leaving The Independent after nearly 12 years. He has been Deputy Editor since May 1998, joining the paper shortly after Independent News & Media (INM) assumed full control.

Simon Kelner, managing director and Editor-in-Chief of The Independent, said today: “Ian has been a highly effective Deputy Editor and has made an enormous contribution to the Independent’s success over the years. His energy, vision and acumen have been felt across the paper, and he has always been a supportive colleague to me in often challenging times. We are extremely sorry to see him go, but wish him the very best in the future.”

Ian Birrell said: “I have hugely enjoyed working with some of the most talented journalists in Britain, but now feel the time is right for a change. It has been hard work, but usually great fun and never less than exciting. It has been a privilege to have played a central role for more than a decade and I wish the titles and all the staff every success for the future.”
