Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Independent has been nominated for the coveted “news provider of the year” prize at this year’s British Journalism Awards.

The news organisation was shortlisted as one of the finalists for the Press Gazette’s 2020 awards alongside seven others – including Sky News, The Sunday Times and The Guardian.

The judges highlighted The Independent’s reporting from elections and protests around the world – and said chief US correspondent Andrew Buncombe showed the importance of having journalists on the ground during his arrest covering the Black Lives Matter demonstrations.

The nomination also referenced Kim Sengupta’s reporting from Iran, and Oliver Carroll’s work covering the Belarus anti-government protests, pointing out that “its journalists were among the few to report” on the ground from those countries.

They also singled out the work of health correspondent Shaun Lintern and his investigations into the Shrewsbury maternity scandal and failures at the Lighthouse Covid-19 testing lab network during 2020.

Several other journalists at The Independent were nominated for prizes at this year’s British Journalism Awards.

Kuba Shand-Baptiste was selected for the best comment writer prize for her work on racism, the education system and corporate advertising during the pandemic.

Our home affairs correspondent Lizzie Dearden was nominated in the crime and legal affairs category for her work exposing how the Home Office kept a grooming gang review secret, and convicted terror offenders had been able to radicalise other inmates inside high-security jails.

The Independent’s Bel Trew, Samira el-Azar, Richard Hall and Oliver Carroll were jointly nominated for the best foreign coverage prize.

The team was selected for its in-depth work covering the aftermath of the Beirut port explosion, in which at least 204 people died, and an investigation into a mercenary recruitment network in Libya.

The winners will be revealed on Wednesday 9 December at a virtual event replacing the traditional gala dinner.
