22 September exclusive on the disgraced Roman Catholic cleric Roderick Wright - "Runaway Bishop Confesses All" screamed the front page - put an estimated 70,000 on sales that day, taking circulation over 4.6 million. Weekend TV news bulletins gave free publicity, but the revelations hadn't come cheap - the paper claims it paid Wright in the region of pounds 20,000.
