The Independent's reputation for unmatched coverage of green issues and the environmental agenda was further reinforced this week when the Environment Editor, Michael McCarthy, was named as Environmental Journalist of the Year at the British Environment and Media Awards. The awards ceremony is sponsored by WWF and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.
The judges referred to McCarthy's "ability to explore and hammer home the influential issues in a unique and informed style" and commented that "his quest to highlight the environmental agenda knows no bounds".
It is McCarthy's third major national award for environmental writing in the past five years.
