Your support makes all the difference. The Daily Star yesterday finished recovering money from to Lord Archer's 1987 libel case against the newspaper, with final settlement believed to be £2.7m. Mr Justice Buckley, in the High Court in London, stayed proceedings after he was told all claims for recovery of damages, costs and interest had been settled without admission of liability by the former Tory deputy chairman.
In July, he repaid the original £500,000, awarded over claims that he had sex with prostitute Monica Coghlan, plus more than £300,000 relating to costs from the trial. Last night Archer was said to have repaid Express Newspapers "the original sum plus the majority of the substantial legal recovery costs".
Today's proceedings related to an agreement over claims for interest over the 15 years and costs in recovering the cash, unofficially estimated at around £1.8m. It is believed this brings the total payout by Archer to under £2.7m, although lawyers would not confirm this. He has completed a year of his four-year sentence for perjury and perverting the course of justice. Last week he was moved from open prison to Lincoln jail for breaching prison rules.
