A woman was also injured in the shooting which happened outside a restaurant on the city's Lisburn Road. She was hit in the back and neck, hospital sources said.
The man was dead on arrival at the City Hospital half a mile away.
The condition of the injured woman was not immediately known.
The shooting happened outside a restaurant not far from the Lisburn Road Royal Ulster Constabulary station, about a mile and a half south of the city centre.
