From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

THE FOOTBALLER Roy Keane, captain of Manchester United, was released by police yesterday after spending a night in cells because of an alleged assault on a woman in a bar.

Mr Keane, 27, was arrested on Monday night after Greater Manchester Police received a call saying a woman had been assaulted in a city centre cafe bar.

The midfielder was held at a Manchester police station after a surgeon advised he needed eight hours rest before questioning. He was questioned yesterday morning and given bail without charge.

He is due to report back to the police station on 13 July, leaving him free to play in this weekend's FA Cup Final.

The player was arrested after 25-year-old Leanne Carey claimed that he kicked her on the leg and poured a drink over her friend.

Mr Keane, who is also captain of the Republic of Ireland team, was celebrating Manchester United's fifth Premiership title win with team-mates.
