Losses:
1 Eastbourne, Sussex and Folkestone, Kent: 300 jobs lost at Guardian Royal Exchange. Another 100 to go through natural wastage as it merges with rival PPP.
2 Doncaster, Yorkshire: Tractor-maker Case UK plans to make 225 staff redundant due to slack demand.
3 London: 400 jobs at investment bank Merrill Lynch cut due to financial crisis.
4 Hastings, East Sussex: Philips to close kettle-making plant with loss of 160 jobs.
Gains:
5 Harlow, Essex: 100 jobs created by American defence company, Raytheon Systems.
6 Eggborough, near Selby, N. Yorkshire: French company Saint Gobain will create 150 jobs at a new glass factory.
7 Doncaster, Yorkshire: English Welsh & Scottish Railways to create 300 jobs at a rail freight service centre.
