Tote windows were closed and there was no bookmakers' ring because cash betting is illegal on the Sabbath. Mingling with the 23,000 at the track were Jockey Club betting intelligence officers unable to substantiate fears of illegal gambling. Winners were cheered home as punters placed bets by telephone on credit or with debit cards. Many had put money on at betting shops on Saturday.
