Reform of university admissions is long overdue. That is why we welcome the proposals from the government working party on how the current system, based on predicted A-level grades, can be replaced by one based on grades obtained. The universities do not like change, and they don't like this, because they are worried it could make it harder for them to fill their places and plan their timetable. But we understand that the Prime Minister was determined to secure reform in the interests of students. He is right to have done so. It should be in universities' interests to have a system that commands public support.
