The new man in charge of Sussex University has a novel way of bringing about change. Professor Michael Farthing is asking his staff to answer a load of questions in an anonymous survey about how the university can be improved.
Sussex's heyday was in the 1960s when it was created by a bunch of clever professors who'd had enough of the narrowness of Oxford and Cambridge. In recent years it has lost its lustre, and Farthing needs to find new ways to improve its standing in the research assessment exercise. Asking staff for their honest opinion is a savvy first step.
