The former Chelsea and Woking winger Clive Walker, released from his job as Brentford's assistant manager earlier this week, has signed for the GM Vauxhall Conference club Cheltenham Town.

The former Manchester City striker Darren Beckford has signed for the League of Wales club Total Network Solutions Llansantffraid.

Alexi Lalas, the United States defender, has signed for Emelec of Ecuador from New England Revolution of Major League Soccer.

Ray Daniel, the former Wales, Arsenal and Sunderland centre-half, has died aged 69. Daniel made 274 league appearances before moving into non- league football with Hereford who he also managed.

The Duke of York will officially open Sunderland's new Stadium of Light on Monday at 11.30am. He will unveil a commemorative plaque and watch the team train.

Gate receipts from the Italy v Russia World Cup play-off in Naples next Saturday will go to Italians left homeless by recent earthquakes.
